Hot Topics at HIMSS 2015
As you probably already know, the HIMSS Conference is taking place this week in Chicago.
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) is a cause-based, global enterprise producing innovations in health IT thought, leadership, education, events, market research, and media services around the world. Founded in 1961, HIMSS encompasses more than 56,000 individuals, of which more than two-thirds work in healthcare organizations (both for and non-profit) around the globe. In addition, HIMSS has over 600 corporate and 250 non-profit partner organizations which share its cause. HIMSS, which is headquartered in Chicago, serves the global health IT community with offices in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Every year HIMSS holds a world healthcare conference. This year’s conference, held from April 12th to 16th, brings together over 38,000 healthcare IT professionals, clinicians, executives, and vendors from around the world.
This year Archer Software is taking part in the conference, which means we have a front row seat for all the action at HIMSS. Many newsworthy innovations have been announced, and many important topics discussed.
Here are some of the big topics from HIMSS 2015:
Apple’s announcement of health tools for the Apple Watch
The hottest mHealth device at HIMSS 2015 isn’t even on the market yet, but several software development firms (including a few providers) are already hard at work on applications for Apple’s new smartwatch. Doximity unveiled its app late last week, while Cerner, Epic, the Mayo Clinic, Vocera, Anthem (with CareEvolution), Medisafe, HealthTap and athenahealth all made announcements or hinted at upcoming apps this week.
The Intelligent Hospital
Managed by the Intelligent Hospital Association, the eponymous pavilion features a suite of “intelligent” demonstrations of what a truly modernized healthcare experience might look like. Visitors are scanned at the pavilion's entrance, and are directed to sign up for demonstrations using a digital card system which tracks attendees and allows them to set up their own personalized demonstration schedule in the pavilion.
The Internet of Relevant Things
Integrated health networks don't get much bigger than Sutter Health. Spanning 26 facilities in five regions, Sutter provides care for more than 100 communities in northern California. On the information technology side, Sutter operates the largest single instance of the Epic electronic health record in the world, with 55,000 users and over 10 million records in the system. All that comes together through an ongoing initiative called One Sutter.
“The patient has always been at the center and always will be,” said Alex Gourlay, Executive Vice President of the Walgreens Boots Alliance and President of Walgreens. “All healthcare professionals believe in a purpose beyond profit. Our purpose must be to help people live healthier, happier lives.” When Gourlay assumed the top job at Walgreens at the end of 2014, he intended to enhance the firm’s core pharmacy business, but also wanted to expand Walgreens’ retail healthcare offerings and push the company even further in its interactions with consumers by offering them more interactive tools to improve their health.
Learning systems which aim to cut the education cycle by years
Rebecca Kush, founder and president of the Clinical Data Standards Consortium (CDSC), told the audience at the session “Achieving a Functioning Learning Health System by 2024 – The Challenges and Benefits of a Successful Journey” that the length of time it takes for an initial medical finding to make its way through the complete cycle of education for a medical professional is 17 years. New advances in technology can contribute to the reduction of that number by increasing the speed at which information travels from researchers to universities to clinicians.
